Spending hours creating content but not getting any results? Avoid this common content mistake and you’ll be a social media master in no time.
Do you spend hours creating content? Sorry to tell you, but no one gives a monkey’s about what you’re putting out. They watch it, read it, listen to it and think to themselves, “what’s in it for me?”
Not only that, but our attention span is getting shorter, with the average attention span of millennials being a quick 12 seconds and the average attention span of Gen Z, being a mere 8 seconds!
Social media is the new networking event. It’s a self-selling hub and marketing minefield. The more you show up, the better chance you have to become visible, build relationships and…MAKE SALES.
A lot of your social media success rides on one mistake:
Having a Bad Headline
Having a bad headline is the root of all your content problems. It is overlooked by business owners I see creating content but is NOT overlooked by their audience.
You should be spending 80% of your time on your headline and 20% of your time on your content.
Your social media headline needs to be:
- Attention Grabbing
And it can be by following the rule of A.I.D.A.
Grab your audience’s attention and make them stop to read. The shop windows in the high street are now reflected on your social media feed. Everyone is always scrolling. Your job is to interrupt your viewer and make them stop to read your content.
Tell your audience why they should care. Have a subtitle or meta description that shows why your content is relevant to them. Once you’ve got someone’s attention and you’ve got them interested, you need to keep that hook there, else they’ll scroll on.
Once you’ve got their attention and piqued their interest, you need to give them a reason to stay. You can do this by evoking emotion, educating them, being entertaining or ideally hitting all three!
Get your audience to DO SOMETHING. This is where your Call to Action comes in. You can do this through the use of imperative language, giving your audience an instruction rather than an option.
This is a real simple marketing principle that will really transform and change your results.
So you’ve posted some content with a great headline and got some people on your hook. They click onto your profile and it’s all a bit…dead or confusing. So, they lose interest, click off and you’ve lost a prospect.
You can avoid this happening by having a headline across your social media channels.
For example, on Instagram, the first line next to your name is your headline. The two lines underneath that, or in some instances, one and a half, is your sub headline.
You’ve got to sell people on the reason why they need to hit that ‘follow’ button, or click onto your website.
Then once you’ve got somebody’s attention and you’ve got them interested, you have to keep that hook there. You can utilise bullet points to give more interest. You can go into facts. You can go into a bit of a story. And so on and so forth…
